Another Gardner In MotoGP
Remy Gardner has put himself on the inside line for his family’s second motorcycle world championship.
The son of Wayne Gardner, the 500cc world champion in 1987 with Honda, has locked down a factory KTM ride that will take him into MotoGP in 2022.
Before then, Remy will be racing with the Red Bull KTM team in Moto2 next year.
Gardner has showed a similar skill on two wheels to his father, always fast but also prone to mistakes.
He is currently recuperating from a hospital visit for surgery on his left thumb after crashing his Kalex in the Moto2 warm-up at Misano in Italy after qualifying on pole position.
“Fly me to the moon. Sing along if you know the words,” he joked after the crash.
But he knows he is making a big step up for 2021 in Moto2.
“I am sure we can do some spectacular things together and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
“I want to thank everyone who has made this possible and a further thanks to KTM for giving me the opportunity. Right now, I am focused on returning to the track as soon as possible, as I still have this season to finish, and I hope we can still achieve some good results before getting my 2021 preparations underway.”
The response from his father, who also raced Supercars in Australia after retiring from motorcycle racing, is predicable and brief.
“Finally some fantastic news,” he tweeted.
But he also put Remy’s promotion into focus.
“The last four years has been a huge challenge using inferior equipment and second-level teams, however the big teams have seen Remy’s talent and now he joins the best team in Moto2 with Aki Ajo as team manager and Sponsored by RedBull and KTM.”
