CHAZ MOSTERT PREDICTS GLOVES OFF IN SUPERCARS
Supercars racing is set for a torrid change in season 2025 if Chaz Mostert is right.
He predicts the new three-stage championship format – Sprint Cup followed by Enduro Cup and The Finals – will trigger tougher competition and more car-to-car contact.
Mostert said the Sprint Cup battle will trigger the change as drivers fight for the crucial Top 10 places through the first eight events in the season, and one guaranteed spot in The Finals.
"I expect the racing next year to be way more gloves-off on than gloves-off," Mostert told Race.news.
The third-place finisher in this year's title fight says the eager on-track action at the season finale in Adelaide is a pointer to what's coming next year.
"The championship changes are interesting. It will be interesting to see how the drivers react," he said.
"I think we saw that a little bit at Adelaide."
Mostert is not sure how the officials will react if the drivers take the gloves off, or the impact of extra repair bills on teams, but he believes the drivers will have extra incentive in season 2025.
"People will have the mentality that if you're definitely inside the Top 10, and safe on points, you can be more aggressive and still book your spot for the last round," he said.
"And, if not, you've got nothing to lose."
Mostert said he was honoured to sweep the three major awards for the 2024 championship, taking the Barry Sheene Medal, Drivers' Driver Award, and Jim Richards Award.
"That was obviously very special and very overwhelming, to be honest," he said.
But he is now focussed on a serious title challenge with Walkinshaw Andretti United and moving his team further up the Supercars' pitlane.
"We took a big step as a team this year. But I definitely think there is more capability in us.
"We just have to make sure nail all the one-percenters. Even myself."
