Double Duty For Brown
There is more than just a Bathurst 1000 victory on the line this weekend for young Will Brown.
He is also in a winner-takes-all shoot-out with Thomas Randle for this year’s Super2 crown.
Brown has been upgraded to the co-driver slot alongside former winner David Reynolds for the Supercars grand final, and even began his duties by flying his boss from Queensland using his light-aircraft license.
But he said he has a firm focus on success in Super2.
“It’s a shoot-out with Tom, so it should be pretty exciting,” Brown told Race News.
The pair are separated by just 38 points with a pair of 16-lap sprints at Mount Panorama to finish their season.
Randle has the advantage and is driving a Nissan Altima which has shown plenty of speed during limited outings in 2020, while Brown is sliding into an Erebus Commodore as part of his long-term deal with the Melbourne outfit.
“We weren’t going to race Super2 at one point, so I’m pretty happy to be out there and in contention for the championship,” Brown said.
“It’s going to be my last race in Super2 so I want to do a good job and go out on a high.”
Brown is familiar with last-round pressure from his earlier days in Formula 4 and the Toyota 86 championship, although he got the job done early when he claimed the carsales TCR Australia last year in a Hyundai.
But his approach, as he gets ready for a full-time ride with Erebus in the Supercars main game for 2021, is clear.
“I want to win the races. If I win then the championship will take care of itself,” he said.
But he’s not getting cocky.
“Tom can drive and the Nissan has definitely proved it is a good car. Hopefully we’ll be able to race hard and, with Brodie Kosteki not running, we should be right together.”
He also sees the advantage of his Super2 track time as he prepares for The Big One with Reynolds.
“I’ll get plenty of laps, which will be good. And I’ll be sharp for Sunday.”
Meantime, he is ready for the Super2 decider with the twin races on Friday and Saturday.
“I definitely think we can win the series. It’s Bathurst, anything can happen.
“We’ll roll it out tomorrow morning and we’ll have the answer by Saturday afternoon.”
