Hamilton Unveils New Helmet For Austria
Black lives really matter to Lewis Hamilton, and the proof is on his helmet in Austria this weekend.
He has changed the traditional white background on his helmet to black as racing resumes after the COVID-19 shutdown.
Hamilton has also put a Black Lives Matter logo onto the top of the helmet, which is pride-of-place for the on-car camera that will follow him through his attempt to win a record equalling seventh world championship in 2020.
The unveiling of his new-look helmet comes after Mercedes-Benz switched its racing colour from silver to black this year, and with drivers expected to take a knee during the pre-race build-up at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday.
“We haven’t all spoken so I am sure this weekend we will,” Hamilton says of the plan for drivers to join the Black Lives Matter campaign.
“It’s not something that has been at the top of my mind. I have been asked about it multiple times but it has not been a priority to me to come with a plan to kneel at the start line. We will see on Sunday, whatever we do we will try to do it united, it’s really important we become united in this sport and we really do have to, to fight the injustices and inequality.”
