Marquez Completes His Comeback

The King of MotoGP has reclaimed his crown.

Marc Marquez scored one of the most significant and emotional wins of his career when he rode to victory in the German Grand Prix.

It marked 381 days since his last MotoGP victory, but also his 11th straight win at the Sachsenring and his eighth consecutive victory in MotoGP.

It also came after three surgeries to repair crash damage that could have ended his motorcycle racing career.

“I said ’Today is my day’,” Marquez said after leading Miguel Oliveira of KTM and championship leader Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha to the flag on a day that produced close racing under the threat of rain.

“It’s one of the most important and hardest moments of my career.”

Jack Miller is still third in the championship standings after riding to sixth on his Ducati.

But all the focus was on Marquez and the #93 Honda as he took an early lead and then held off his rivals.

There were tears, cheers and some serious emotion as the celebrations began in front of a regular MotoGP crowd thanks to the easing of Covid restrictions in Germany.

“Before this weekend I thought I’d fight for the podium and try and be close with the top guys. I knew it was a great opportunity,” said Marquez.

“The victory was a low possibility but I said I said ‘If it’s perfect conditions, I’ll try’. When I saw a few raindrops on Lap 4 or 5 I said ‘It’s my race’.

“At that point I pushed and kept the same pace. I pushed even more and I said ‘Ok, it’s time to take a risk’.

“It was really had to keep concentrating, all the memories from the last year were there in my mind. But we did it and we’ll do it again.”
