Mostert Fills His Diary With TCR
Daytona is out this year but Chaz Mostert still has an itch he has to scratch.
“I’ve been sitting around for too long. Nothing since October at Bathurst,” Mostert told Race News.
He cannot make the 24-Hour endurance classic in Florida, USA in 2021, despite scoring a class win in a BMW last year, but nothing is going to stop him racing a TCR car for the first time.
If things go to plan, Mostert will do the whole TCR championship, as well as some local GT3 sports car racing, in addition to his Supercars program with Walkinshaw Andretti United.
“I just enjoy racing It’s good to get some laps,” he laughed.
Mostert is plugging into the Audi RS3 that was raced in 2019 by Garth Tander, with new backing from Bostik, starting with the Race Tasmania meeting at Symmons Plains over the Australia Day long weekend.
It’s currently only a one-race deal, but he is aiming for a full-season attack on the hot hatch championship with his great mate and race engineer Adam DeBorre in his garage.
“It’s no secret that I like doing stuff outside my main gig. I really enjoyed the GT3 stuff,” Mostert said.
“I always like to think that driving something different will widen your experience and maybe help with something you see for the main game.
“We’re trying to do some GT3 stuff. With TCR we’ve still got to work out what’s happening.”
But his objective is clear, as Tander and Russell Ingall have both won races with the Audi fielded by Melbourne Performance Centre.
“I’m definitely keen to do the whole series. But we’ll have to see what happens.
“TCR is a pretty cool series. Racing door to door is what all drivers want to be involved in.”
While Mostert is locked for his TCR debut, there is still no confirmation of his Supercars co-driver for Bathurst in 2021. He had been expected to pair-up with Warren ‘Wazza’ Luff after they took a Mount Panorama podium last year, but pitlane rumours suggest that Tickford Racing refugee Lee Holdsworth will slide into the WAU Commodore alongside Mostert and Luff will slide across to partner Bryce Fullwood.
“I’m looking forward to TCR this year. After sitting on the sidelines for most of 2020, it will be great to get back to the track,” said Troy Russell of MPC.
“It’s great to have Chaz on board with us. He is obviously a great driver and an excellent person to have around the team. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
“And of course, Chaz presents an excellent opportunity to get some strong results. We saw in 2019 with Garth that the Audi is capable to running at front, so we’re looking forward to see what Chaz can do in the pack.
