ALL THE BOYS IN SUPER2
Jordan Boys leads the Super2 championship for 2021 after Brock Feeney copped a penalty in the second of the Supercars supports at Mount Panorama.
Feeney broke through for his first win on Saturday with Triple Eight – wearing the classic #888 on his Commodore with Red Bull backing – but Boys claimed the second contest and also the series lead after beating Tyler Everingham and Zak Best home on Sunday.
Best is second on the point-score with Feeney still third after a penalty for contact dropped him ninth in Race 2.
SNOWY SUCCESS FOR TANAK
No-one could get close to Ott Tanak in the Arctic Rally as the Hyundai driver dominated from start-to-finish in his Hyundai i20 WRC.
The youngest of the Flying Finns, Kalle Rovanpera romped home in second with his Toyota GR Yaris after fending off the second Hyundai of Thierry Neuville, as world champion Sebastian Ogier buried his Toyota in a snowbank and dropped to 20th place as he dug the car out of its predicament.
“In the end we did a very good weekend, with only one mistake. It’s an amazing place, definitely one of the best places to have a winter rally,” Tanak said.
Surprisingly, Toyota’s youngster Rovanpera is now the championship leader with 39 points, ahead of Neuville on 35 and Ogier on 31.
The World Rally Championship continues on April 22-25 with another new event, the Croatia Rally on bitumen near the capital of Zagreb.
BENZ IN THE DESERT
Nick de Vries is the early leader in the new Formula E season after scoring his first win for the Mercedes-EQ team.
The youngster won the first heat at Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, emerging from the desert weekend with a slight edge over second-race winner Sam Bird from Jaguar.
The season opener also gave de Vries his first pole position in the battery-powered championship, although Jaguar is ahead in the team standings after the Saudi opener with Mercedes-EQ in second and Envision Virgin Racing in third.
LOWNDES PLAYING IN PORSCHES
Craig Lowndes is hoping for a full season of Carrera Cup to keep him sharp before he pairs with Jamie Whincup for the final time at the Bathurst 1000 in October.
He has already locked-in the first two events with Wall Racing and is keen to fill his year by punting the Cup Car.
“We’re working on it. I’d definitely like to do the whole year,” Lowndes told Race News.
The Carrera Cup contest will open as the major supporting event when Supercars race at Sandown this month, followed by an appearance at The Bend in May.
