LOWNDES FIRES IN CARRERA CUP

Craig Lowndes collected his first podium since committing to this year’s Carrera Cup competition at the Sandown Supercars meeting.

He was third in a dry race on Saturday, although spun out of a torrid battle in the Sunday stoush.

Canberran privateer Cameron Hill is the early championship leader with Lowndes in eighth as the category next races at The Bend in South Australia on May 8-9.

BOWE TROPHY GOES TO MAWSON

Joey Mawson scored his first big win since returning to Australian motorsport at Sandown, scooping the John Bowe trophy for S5000 single-seaters.

Mawson, who has been successful in a range of open-wheeler categories in Europe, qualified fastest for the V8-powered racers and eventually took top spot for the weekend.

Nathan Herne, who was bouncing back from a big crash in the previous round at Phillip Island when his car was launched over the back of Tom Randle’s racer, finished the weekend in second place ahead of Luis Leeds.

CAMPBELL WINS AT SEBRING

Aussie Porsche ace, Matt Campbell, has scored a class win in the 69th running of the classic Sebring 12-Hour race in Florida, USA.

He was ninth overall in the sports car enduro with a Porsche 911, as Cadillac won overall with a prototype driven by Sebastian Bourdais, Tristan Vautier and Loic Duval.

It was the third victory in five years for the Cadillac team, while Campbell’s WeatherTech Porsche only got to the front in GTLM in the final 10 laps after a collision between two of its rivals.

OFF-ROAD WIN FOR HOWELLS

The first round of the Australian Off-Road Championship was won by Josh Howells and Eric Hume at St George in Queensland.

Howells resisted pressure from a range of highly-rated rivals, including former Supercars racer Paul Weel, to lead throughout the event to claim victory by more than four minutes.

Off-road veterans Greg Gartner and Jamie Jennings eventually finished second.
