Schumi 2.0 Graduates To F1 With Honours

The second-generation raced has just locked-up the FIA Formula 2 crown to go with the F3 title he won in 2018, making him the best-credentialed of the youngsters who are preparing to graduate to F1.

His place is reserved at Haas, where he will line-up alongside the mercurial – and highly aggressive – Russian driver, Nikita Mazepin.

Schumi 2.0 might not have the one-lap fire of some rivals, or his seven-time world champion father Michael, but he was the most consistent and intelligent racer of this year’s F2 class.

His class showed under pressure in Bahrain when he did more than enough, including some bold overtaking moves, to lock down the crucial championship.

“I really wanted to come to Formula 1 as a champion and I’m very happy to have done so. I am very happy to have won this title,” said Schumacher.

There is an Aussie connection to Schumacher’s success as Oscar Piastri, who won the F3 crown this year, will slide into the German driver’s car.

Both have competed for the Italian Prema team through 2020 but, while Schumacher is upgrading to Haas, Piastri has decided to stay with Prema in Formula 2 next year.

“I want to thank the Prema team and the Ferrari Driver Academy for what has been an unforgettable season,” said Schumacher.

“We did not get the most race wins, but none of the others performed as consistently as us in bringing home points. I think that was the key factor that brought me the championship title.”
